14th Jul: Sylvia Looking To Spring
Published: 14 Jul 2017 - - Author: NZ Racing Desk

Sylvia Kay’s boutique stable has been punching well above its weight this season.

The Levin-based horsewoman has trained a personal best 11 winners from her eight-strong team deep into the 2016-17 term.

The star of the show has been the impressive Dolcetto, a powerful son of Per Incanto who has made a rapid rise through the grades and was crowned by his successful open class debut at Awapuni last time out.

The four-year-old’s overall record of five wins and two runner-up finishes from his eight appearances stamps him as one of the brightest stars on the central districts scene.

Plans for Dolcetto are now likely to include a run close to home before the Hawke’s Bay carnival.

“He’s come through his run at Awapiuni the other day very well,” Kay said “He’s at the top of his game at the moment.

“He’ll go to the Levin meeting at the end of the month - there’s an open sprint there for him.

“We’ll concentrate on Hawke’s Bay after that. He’s not a weight-for-age horse yet, he’s still quite well placed in the handicaps so we’ll find something for him.”

Dolcetto’s stablemate Sylvester went close to giving Kay a winning double at Awapuni, where he finished second in his first outing for six weeks.

“He’s still a baby, but I’m hoping he’ll develop into a two-miler later on,” she said.

Dr Watson has been another major contributor this season with three wins and a host of minor placings have emphasised his genuine nature.

“There’s not much of him, but he really tries hard,” Kay said. “He gets through the heavy tracks okay, which is quite surprising as he’s a lightly-framed horse. He is as tough as old boots though.”
