Welcome to Isola Racing Stables
Class A Trainer’s Licence
Moira Murdoch owns and manages Isola Racing Stables. As a trainer, she has amassed over $3.5 million in winning stakes throughout her career.
These days Moira trains 28 horses on the Murdoch’s 650 acre beef farm, which also boundaries the beach at Waiuku. A great believer in the therapeutic value of working horses on the beach and in the salt water, combined with the relaxed environment, led Moira to take on those with special requirements and leg issues and successfully rehabilitating a number of quality gallopers back to their full potential. Working horses on the beach is also great for freshening up their minds, while back at the farm there are a number of training options, including strengthening work on the hills.
The property is complimented with spacious paddocking, particularly large boxes, and boxed yards and its only a half hour from Pukekohe if barrier work and at-the-course education is required.
Solvit’s legacy has enabled Moira to expand her operations and she continues to achieve great success, most recently with Marky Mark – 3 wins from 4 starts all at Group level, including the Manawatu Produce Sires Stakes, and just under $200k in stake money.
‘Giving owners the best experience and enjoyment possible. It is something really special and it is our job to see that this is done.’
The Early Years
Moira Murdoch’s career as a trainer commenced in the late 1970’s when she started pre-training for stables such as the McKees, Chris McNab and Neville Atkins. A ‘Permit to Train’ licence also enabled her to train a few as well in her own right.
The 1980’s – Solvit
In the early 1990’s, Moira gained her Class A Public Trainers Licence and in 1991 Moira purchased Solvit (with her husband Mike, his sister Adrienne and her husband Doug), as a yearling for the princely sum of $4500.00. He was to remain in Moira’s ownership for the rest of his life after a particularly successful and outstanding career. Solvit’s biggest claim to fame was winning the Cox Plate in 1994, a huge coup for the then 35 year old Kiwi girl from Waiuku, knocking the big guns down and placing herself in history and all over the Aussie headlines. That year Solvit also won the Kelt Capital having run second in 1993 and again in 1995. Throughout his career he amassed over $2million in winning stakes and it was from that point that Moira’s training career went on a roll.
Recently Solvit passed away, just short of his 27th birthday – he was of course at home at Waiuku.
The 1980’s – Secured Deposit
In the mid 1980’s, Moira was involved with the talented galloper Secured Deposit, whom she accompanied to Australia, riding work and strapping him throughout a successful career. He was to be placed twice and then won a Sydney Cup at three attempts then returning to NZ to win the St Leger in 1983 and the Auckland Cup of 1984.
