Welcome to 'Rob Patterson Racing'
Class A Public Trainers Licence
Rob Patterson started his career with horses as a child on his parents Southland farm.
Robs’ father was a private trainer and Rob often rode work for him and others in the southern region. Eventually his father retired from farming and moved to the Gore racecourse as Caretaker enabling Rob to gain even more experience in the racing industry.
Later in his career he worked for Bill Thurlow and leased the successful Gore Cup winner ‘Something Happened’. At the age of 20 Rob held his first training licence that of Owner Trainer but these days he has public trained for more than a decade.
At one stage he trained in partnership with Kevin Gray, during the time that the highly successful ‘Legs’was champion of the stable.
Rob currently trains from his New Plymouth base with 16 horses in constant work.
A 14 acre block just minutes from the New Plymouth racecourse offers a base for agisting spelling and education and a 20 horse barn leased at the New Plymouth racing centre site offers further access to the training centre facilities.
During his career Rob has amassed close to $1.5million in stake winnings, he believes in giving every horse time to develop. Part of the Patterson operations includes breaking and preparing for overseas ventures, all the breaking for the stables of John Wheeler and selling a few in his own right to Singapore and Hong Kong.
Some great horses have been through Rob’s hands before heading offshore, these include Court Ruler (who later won the Queensland Derby) and the Crofskey bred and owned Habibi. Good owners includes breeders who provide a source of youngsters to the stables each year.
Robs ambition to keep winning races includes his adage ‘Let the Horses Do the Talking’.!
