About ‘David Hayes’
David Hayes passion for jumps horses shines through from his extensive experience as a young man in Cheshire. Involved in racing all of his life before emigrating to New Zealand, he was raised in a Country Inn where his parents raced a number of very good horses, including those in syndicates amounting to some high profile winning Steeplechase and Point to Point horses. David was involved in the working and education of these, breaking, pre-training and in the open hunt field qualifying National Hunt horses and riding Point to Point qualifiers.
David has had some great relationships through his UK connections, including the Sangster boys, and the incredible experiences and knowledge gained were to assist him considerably in setting up his Portland Racing stables in New Zealand.
In 2007 David Hayes immigrated from England and set up his training establishment near Dannevirke New Zealand, training off the Woodville course. For the first two years he was the Huntsman for the Dannevirke Hunt Club, and continued to train and pinhook for the sales.

Portland Racing regularly average around ten horses in work at any one time. Pride of place of course has to go to Weregoingtogetcha - a yearling purchase intended to be a Ready to Run Sales prospect, he was passed in at $160k by David …….. subsequently, a business associate partnered him in the ownership and the rest is racing history.
Shallwetellthem gave David his first win in NZ and is currently being prepared for his jumping ticket, so definitely a horse to watch coming through the jumping ranks in the future.
Hunting
The education of the racers doesn’t stop on the track. David keenly hunts and so any possible jumpers can be well educated under the skillfully experienced huntsman’s hands.
Pinhooking
‘Pinhooking’ – purchasing youngsters to turn over at a later time – often at the Ready to Runs is something else David has had some great successes with, latterly Red Adventure that sold extremely well.
